My Outreach & Extension

A core part of my work is translating rigorous analysis into decision-ready products for farmers, agribusiness, and policymakers, and engaging directly with the people who use it. My outreach spans policy briefings, stakeholder-facing publications, podcasts and panels, and reusable software, alongside earlier extension experience built around farm and agribusiness fieldwork.

Policy briefings and interagency engagement

While at the USDA Economic Research Service, I delivered briefings on USDA-ERS reports to the Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation, the Farm Production and Conservation Business Center (FPAC), the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and the Office of the Chief Economist (OCE). I presented on the size, scope, and market penetration of the FCIP to an audience of 142 participants at the 2025 Agricultural Outlook Forum, USDA’s oldest and largest annual stakeholder gathering, and I continue to leverage connections across USDA-ERS, RMA, NASS, FPAC, and OCE to strengthen institutional partnerships for risk-management programs.

Briefs, podcasts, and panels

I lead and co-author ARPC policy briefs that turn technical findings into concise, accessible formats on prevented-planting buy-up elimination, supplemental crop-insurance risk reduction, premium interest deferrals, regional financial stress, and the evolution of U.S. crop-insurance plans. To extend the reach of this research I have:

  • Appeared on the Morning Coffee and Ag Markets podcast (Episode 77) on how insured farmers can adjust to USDA’s EARP rule;
  • Served on a panel at the 2025 Midwest Extension Farm Management and Outlook Conference in Omaha, NE; and
  • Contributed scheduled University of Arkansas Extension and Southern Ag Today articles on rice.

Tools that outlast a single project

I view well-documented, reusable software as a form of outreach: it lets others reproduce and build on the analysis. I lead or contribute to open-source R packages (for FCIP simulation, price and basis, production-cost calibration, agricultural peril metrics, and editorial workflows) that are deployed across the Center’s publications and now form part of its analytical backbone.
